Director of Knowledge Management

Woodward is seeking a Director of Knowledge Management for a multi-faceted role with high level integrity, diligence, and analytical thinking that contributes to our firm’s mission with an interpersonal engagement that cultivates positive and meaningful working relationships with colleagues and clients. 

CORE JOB ACCOUNTABILITIES: 

Reporting to the Growth Partner, our Director of Knowledge Management will collect, organize, update, and disseminate comprehensive legal knowledge and implement information management infrastructure to ensure knowledge assets are accessible, organized, and streamlined for the delivery of knowledge management department services within the firm. 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  1. Conceive, develop, implement, and maintain a knowledge management strategy and infrastructure; 

  2. Monitor and report on legal developments, news, business intelligence through website news events, blogs, newsletters, and other legal updates; 

  3. Create and maintain a central work product depository, including electronic and physical documents, template documents, precedents, and checklists; 

  4. Develop, implement, and maintain file management and naming protocols, databases, and skills inventories; 

  5. Provide training across the firm regarding the use of the knowledge management infrastructure and facilitate communication and coordination among management, lawyers, students, staff, IT, and others; 

  6. Work with the Growth Partner and Director of IT Support and Information Systems, to drive continuous knowledge management service improvement, new technologies, and knowledge management service delivery; 

  7. Work with Practice Group Leaders to identify knowledge needs and coordinate training sessions for practice groups; 

  8. Work with HR to ensure alignment of learning and development objectives with knowledge management offerings; and, 

  9. Serve as a Privacy Officer for the purpose of compliance with the Personal Information Protection Act (BC) – PIPA – and the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (Canada) - PIPEDA.

QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Bachelor of Law degree with Canadian Bar Association admission/membership, or equivalent work experience in the legal services industry. This position is ideal for a Lawyer, Law Librarian, or Paralegal with certification, diploma, or degree, from a recognized institution. 

  • A minimum of 10 years’ working experience in a law firm or legal setting reporting to one or more partners, executive level managers or equivalent. 

  • Excellent research skills with familiarity and training in legal information management systems with extensive library experience and knowledge of privacy legislation, preferred. 

  • Certification or training as a law librarian, or a paralegal with experience in Aboriginal law, considered a significant asset. 

  • Training and experience using Microsoft Office products (e.g., Outlook, MS Word, MS Excel, PowerPoint) and extensive familiarity with Worldox (or other document management systems), and the implementation of knowledge management systems, strategies, and infrastructure.
