Chief Executive Officer - Legal Aid BC

Location: Vancouver, BC
Deadline: Until Filled
Salary: $225,000 to $275,000

Legal Aid BC acknowledges the ancestral and traditional lands of all Indigenous peoples throughout British Columbia in which they operate and provide services. Truth and reconciliation, equity, diversity, and inclusion are core beliefs of Legal Aid BC. Therefore, LABC encourages applications from all qualified individuals, including women, Indigenous people, persons with disabilities, visible minorities, people of all sexual orientations and gender identities and expressions, and others who may contribute to the further diversification of the organization.

Legal Aid BC is a provincial crown corporation created by the Legal Services Society (LSS) Act to provide legal information, advice, and representation services. Every year, Legal Aid BC (LABC) helps tens of thousands of British Columbians with serious criminal law cases, family and child protection matters, and immigration issues. They do so through a range of legal information, advice and representation services, as determined as part of their obligations under the LSS Act, offered at legal aid locations throughout the province. Their priority is to serve the interests of people with low incomes, but many of their services are available to all British Columbians.

LABC’s mandate is to help people to solve their legal problems, to facilitate access to justice, to establish and administer an effective and efficient system for providing legal aid to people in BC, and provide advice to the Attorney General about legal aid and access to equitable justice for people in BC. The organization is committed to working with their many partners in the justice system, sharing knowledge, and improving access to justice for the disadvantaged. LABC has been proudly recognized as one of BC’s Top 100 Employers in 2024, and consists of a team of dedicated staff, committed to making a different in the lives of their clients.

Legal Aid BC is now looking for its next Chief Executive Officer (“CEO”) to propel the organization forward and continue to positively influence the provincial justice system.

Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Chief Executive Officer is accountable for the day-to-day leadership and operations of Legal Aid BC, and acts as a liaison between the Board and LABC management and staff. The CEO leads the Executive Management Committee, which includes vice presidents of the four divisions. The CEO is expected to assume leadership and influencing roles in the legal community on matters related to access to justice, the delivery of legal aid and legal information services, and justice reform generally.

The next CEO will bring a successful background in executive-level strategic and operational planning and execution, including responsibility for a similar function in a generally analogous organization. The ideal candidate brings knowledge of crown corporation governance and the province’s justice and legal services systems, as well as an understanding of the social services community. Regardless of background, the successful candidate must work well within a multi-disciplinary team environment, effectively engage the energy and commitment of others, build high moral and group commitment to goals and objectives, and ensure staff demonstrate accountability in their areas of responsibility. This role is based in Vancouver, BC.

The salary range for this position is $225,000 to $275,000, plus additional elements of compensation. Placement within a salary band is typically based upon a review of skills, experience, and internal equity.
