INDIGENOUS BAR ASSOCIATION CONGRATULATES KOREN LIGHTNING ON KING’S COUNSEL DESIGNATION

Ottawa, ON - The Indigenous Bar Association in Canada (IBA) extends its heartfelt congratulations to Koren Lightning on her recent designation as King's Counsel by the Law Society of Alberta. This prestigious recognition underscores Lightning's unwavering commitment to excellence in the legal profession and her significant contributions to the legal community.
Koren, a mother of two beautiful daughters and a proud member and former Councillor of the Samson Cree Nation (which forms part of the Maskwacis Nation and is a party to Treaty No. 6), has consistently demonstrated exemplary leadership and dedication throughout her career. As a passionate advocate for Indigenous rights and justice, her work has been instrumental in advancing Indigenous legal issues and promoting inclusivity within the legal profession.
As a past president of the IBA, Koren has played a pivotal role in shaping the organization and advocating for the rights of Indigenous peoples. Her leadership and vision have been invaluable in driving positive change and empowering Indigenous lawyers across the country.
In her current role as Legal Director of Wahkohtowin Law and Governance Lodge, Koren has been at the forefront of advancing, establishing and implementing Indigenous legal orders. Through her innovative approach and deep understanding of Indigenous governance principles, she has worked tirelessly to empower Indigenous communities and revitalize traditional legal systems.
