Applicant's Indigeneity and Community

Article 3 of the Indigenous Bar Association’s Bylaws, outlines that eligibility for membership in the IBA requires an applicant to be Indigenous. “Indigenous” is defined in the IBA Bylaws to include “status and non-status Indian, Inuit and Métis peoples of Canada.” The information you are asked to provide below will be used by the IBA Board of Directions (the “Board”) to confirm your connection to the Indigenous nation(s) and community(ies) to which you have claimed belonging.

As outlined in the 2022 Final Report of the IBA Membership Committee, for the purposes of IBA membership “Métis” refers to refers to a distinctive peoples who, in addition to their mixed ancestry developed their own customs, way of life, and recognizable group identity separate from their First Nation and European forebears. This definition of “Métis” does not encompass all individuals with mixed First Nation and European heritage.

The IBA recognizes that colonial law and policies (including but not limited to Residential and Day Schools, the Sixty Scoop, and forced adoption) have resulted in some Indigenous people being removed or displaced from their community. As such, individuals may not know their Indigenous nation or they may only be in the process of reconnecting to their Indigenous nation and/or community. For those applicants affected by this disruption, you are encouraged to provide any additional information about your indigeneity which you may wish to share. The IBA is committed to protecting a place of safety for its members. Additional information provided will be used solely to verify eligibility for membership in accordance with the IBA’s Bylaws. Additional information can also be submitted to the IBA Board as an attachment directly below for consideration along with your application.
