Senior Manager & Legal Counsel, Employment Law & Litigation
The Opportunity:
You will be joining a dynamic and experienced team of lawyers and legal professionals providing enterprise legal services to our offices in Toronto, San Francisco, London, Hong Kong, Singapore, India, and jurisdictions of other offices, subsidiaries, and portfolio companies.
Reporting to the Director & Legal Counsel, Employment Law & Litigation, you will function as a trusted legal business advisor to the organization, and primarily to our colleagues in People & Culture. You will exercise strong judgment in providing pragmatic, well-reasoned and timely legal advice on the full spectrum of labour and employment law matters. This role will also partner in supporting general corporate/commercial litigation matters for the organization and its subsidiaries and portfolio companies.
The position is in Toronto and please note that our offices will be moving downtown Toronto in 2024. This is a hybrid position, the details to be determined based on business needs.
Who you'll work with:
You will work closely with the Director & Legal Counsel, Employment Law & Litigation in collaborating with and supporting various internal and external partners, including People & Culture, Marketing & Communications, Enterprise Legal Services, Investment counsel, and Privacy and Compliance.
What you’ll do:
Provide proactive and strategic legal advice on all aspects of employment and labour law for the organization;
Respond to/manage employment demand letters, labour grievances, employment litigation files, human rights applications, and other claims/proceedings;
Development of policies, procedures and programs by identifying legal and regulatory issues as they arise;
Conduct and/or provide support on various workplace investigation matters;
Provide general advice and legal oversight on global mobility matters, such as work permits, travel authorizations, expatriate employees and secondees, and acting as liaison with external counsel as required;
Provide primary corporate/commercial litigation counsel support on matters affecting the organization and its various portfolio companies;
Keep apprised of developments in legislation and case law and assist in the identification and assessment of such developments on designated lines of business;
Conduct research on legal issues and prepare opinions and present such opinions to the designated lines of business;
Develop and sustain good working relationships with business partners by facilitating open communication and becoming familiar with the designated lines of business;
Take personal accountability for assignments delegated to others by monitoring their progress and work product and ensuring that they provide uniformly high-quality legal services; and
Participate as a team member, in various projects relating to product and service development by providing legal advice, identifying potential legal risks, and assisting with the development of risk mitigation strategies.
What you’ll need
Bachelor of Laws/Juris Doctorate/Bachelor of Civil Laws;
At least 5 years of solid and progressive employment and labour law and civil litigation experience at leading law firm and/or in-house at a leading company;
Called to the Bar of Law Society of Ontario and be in good standing;
Strong skill set in risk management, both from a legal and reputational standpoint, litigation strategy, and ability to act as a trusted business advisor;
Proficient knowledge of applicable legal and regulatory environment within practice areas;
Strong communication skills (oral and written), excellent interpersonal skills, and client service orientation;
Excellent research, drafting, and analytical skills;
Strong attention to detail and ability to make sound legal recommendations;
Work well both independently and in collaboration with other team members;
Ability to take initiative and exercise consistent good judgment; and
Excellent time-management skills and ability to prioritize.
