Associate Professor and Director, Foreign Trained Lawyers Program

Position Description

The University of Calgary’s Faculty of Law is in the midst of a sustained period of growth and renewal. In its Strategic Plan, Energy, Innovation, Impact , UCalgary Law set itself the dual goals of enhancing its international eminence in the areas of energy, environmental and natural resources law and of continuing its position of national leadership in the area of experiential learning.

The Faculty of Law invites applications for an academic appointment as Director, Foreign Trained Lawyers Program (FTLP) and Associate Professor. This is a Limited Term appointment for three years , with the potential for renewal depending on the performance and funding. The anticipated start date will be Spring 2021, but alternate dates may be considered for exceptional candidates.

The new Foreign Trained Lawyers Program (FTLP) will be a full-year post-bachelor’s certificate program that will allow internationally trained lawyers to fulfill educational requirements outlined by the National Committee on Accreditation (NCA) of the Federation of Law Societies of Canada. It will also offer professional development training, student support and mentorship, and articling and career placement assistance for students in the program.

This is a new venture for UCalgary Law. Applications will accordingly be welcomed from professionals who have an established record of successful program design and program administration, and who are familiar with the challenges associated with the integration of foreign-trained lawyers into the Canadian legal profession. The Director will provide intellectual leadership and mentoring within the Faculty of Law, and among the broader community, including among external stakeholders. The Director will also have teaching responsibilities. Experience with innovative educational approaches, course development and coordination, would be advantageous. Successful applicants will also be expected to make contributions to areas of service.

The successful applicant must have a JD/LLB, and either be a member of the Bar in Alberta, or otherwise qualified to obtain admission.

Given the premium placed on collegiality, at the University of Calgary, candidates will also be expected to demonstrate a genuine commitment to constructive participation in the life of the School, the University and the broader professional community.
