Assistant Professor or Associate Professor

The Common Law Section of the Faculty of Law at the University of Ottawa invites applications for a  tenure-track or tenured faculty position in Indigenous Law in order to strengthen our teaching and research capacity in the field of Indigenous legal issues and to engage in the decolonization of our programs.

Title of the position: Assistant Professor or Associate Professor. Full Professor will only be considered should the successful candidate possess the appropriate level of experience and commensurate achievements.

Area of expertise:  Indigenous Law

Terms:  Tenure-track position.  This position is in the English Common Law Program, taught in English.

Starting date: July 1, 2021

Academic Duties: The functions of a member of the academic staff include, in varying proportions: a) teaching activities; b) scholarly activities revealed by research, artistic or literary creation, or professional work; c) academic service activities; and d) supervision of graduate students.

Skill requirements: Prior to appointment, candidates must hold an undergraduate degree in common law and have completed or be on the verge of completing either a master’s or doctoral degree in law. In the case of a candidate currently enrolled in an LL.M., the candidate must acquire the degree within 6 months of appointment. In the case of a candidate currently enrolled in a doctoral program, the candidate’s supervisor will be expected to verify that there is a reasonable likelihood that the dissertation will be submitted prior to appointment.

Preference will be given to candidates with superior academic records, established backgrounds in research and publication, administrative and leadership experience, and the capacity for excellence in teaching and contribution to the academic life and governance of the Faculty, excellent communication skills in English and French.  Passive knowledge of the other official language in Canada is a requirement for tenure.  English-French bilingualism is a fundamental value of the University of Ottawa.

Wages: Salary scale for an Assistant Professor starts at $86,986 and at $96,088 for an Associate Professor and $115,368 for Full Professor

A commitment to Reconciliation, Indigenization and Decolonization is one of the six pillars of the Common Law Section`s Strategic Plan, adopted in 2019.  This plan includes support for Indigenous learners through the Office of the Indigenous Learner Advocate and Indigenous Advisor, course offerings in Indigenous law, including the development of a mandatory course to respond to Call to Action 28, expanding Indigenous research and community outreach.
